The Queen is Dead

I am Mirela Lacusta, Queen of the Gypsies, as was my mother before me. Some call me an enchantress, a wise woman, a healer, but to my people, I am so much more. Being able to tell the future, and the past of others, I have led them across lifetimes. To be with me now, in this city where I am needed most. My country has lost use for us, so we wander continuously. Traveling with my followers, the ones that have experience of my powers. Finding the lost souls, that need me to heal them.

When the Vampires came with their hellhounds and werewolves. Did the villagers come to me for help? No. Instead, they banished us. Accusing my followers of being part of the evil, and me as their leader, the witch of causing all the misery. How could I make them understand that the beast they were looking for, lived amongst them? We were not the threat. We were the cure. Village after village, town after town, the plague of dead bodies followed us. Ripped apart or drained of blood, it all pointed to us, and there were none that would listen. More than once one or more of my tribe were accused, convicted, and executed, before rigor mortise had set in the dead. No defense for us, only local justice, as the crowds cursed us. We could only watch, as our family dwindled, at the hands of the executioner.

Going across the country, the killers followed us. Somehow, they stayed out of sight, but close. I could not see them, but the feeling of being watched, never evaded my mind’s eye. Had they tapped into me watching through my eyes. Listening through my ears, hearing what I heard. Did they know every thought about where we would go next? I could not be sure. I did know that they were bound to this land, so we came to England.

Now we are in London, and I can help those that come to me with their needs. Each one, has something that worries them; my visions, and words, give them peace. As I can give to all, peace that listen.

A carriage approaches quickly, the jiggle of the chains and rattle of the wheels on the cobbles. It travels with great speed, on this narrow path. How much fear it must cause, in the horses pulling it to the destination. I must stop it and put them at ease. A flourish of my silken gold laced robes should bring them to a stop, so I can talk to them.

Standing under the light, of a lamp spinning. The sparkles in the dark night, must look as if I was on fire, as the driver pulled hard on the reigns. The horses stopping, just out of reach, I moved to touch them and whisper for them to be calm; as I passed them and moved to the window of the carriage.

“Why have we stopped.” Came a voice, from inside the box.
